Colatura returns with their highly anticipated EP, If I’m Being Honest, released on Easy Does It Records. Known for their signature blend of dreamy melodies, fuzzy guitars, and emotionally charged storytelling, the band’s latest work is their most introspective and vulnerable yet.
If I’m Being Honest, was recorded in Toronto with producer Nixon Boyd (Hollerado, Dizzy) and mixed by Digo Best. Across four deeply personal tracks, If I’m Being Honest explores the complexities of self-doubt, heartbreak, and resilience. The EP unfolds like a series of late-night confessions—self-aware, nostalgic, aching, and ultimately cathartic.
Lead single “I Wanna Get Better” wrestles with the weight of nostalgia and personal growth, reflecting on youthful innocence and the struggle to live up to one’s promise. A love letter to a younger self, singer Jennica Best urges her to savor that moment in life, when things were simpler and anything felt possible. She expresses regret for not meeting her own expectations, while still holding onto a hope that maybe there’s still time.
“I Can Talk to Your Voicemail” is a gut-wrenching reflection on love lost, broken promises, and the painful realization that moving on isn't always mutual. It examines the toll mental health can have on relationships and faces the fact that ultimately the only person who can save you is yourself.
“(Every Time I Think About You) It’s About Me” looks at patterns in relationships and tries to unpack why we so often repeat dynamics, despite desperately wanting a different outcome. It’s about coming to terms with the fact that, very often, you’re the problem.
The EP closes with “Survive”, a raw, powerful anthem of resilience, shedding the past and reclaiming personal identity.
In the production, the EP focuses on contrast—balancing quiet, intimate moments with bursts of heavy, textured guitars. While instrumentally drawing sonic inspiration from shoegaze, If I’m Being Honest takes a different approach with the vocals, bringing them forward in the mix with a drier, more intimate room tone. This choice allows the lyrics to stand out, adding a sense of intimacy amid the swirling wall of sound.
For fans of Alvvays, Soccer Mommy, Snail Mail, Wednesday, and Slow Pulp, If I’m Being Honest is an emotional deep dive into what it means to hurt, heal, and move forward.
